Summer Academy for Pluralist Economics 2019: Economics in Transformation

Our Summer Academy. Your economics: 9 workshops, 100 participants, 20 lecturers. One week of eye-opening and engaging learning. Your academic experience of the year.

Brought to you by Network for Pluralist Economics and Protestant Academy of Thuringia.

Do you have the impression that our society faces daunting challenges and that these challenges need to be addressed on the level of the economy? Are you asking yourself how we can analyse, comprehend and shape the economy? As we see it, discourse on economics and economic policy is marked by an insistence that growth is the supreme goal and that “there is no alternative” while pointing out “the hard facts.” Our response: The economy is a multifaceted, highly complex process. Yet, mainstream economics is far too narrow and one-dimensional in its approach to grasp this and offers little room for critical reflection.

It is high time to change this, high time for our summer school! Here is where you will be able to let your curiosity and inquisitiveness run free, explore alternative approaches to economics, and engage with a broad range of like-minded students, inspiring activists and leading scholars. We have prepared an exciting programme for you, consisting of nine different week-long workshops, topical evening lectures, and excursions.

Do you like to learn, debate, and have fun with young people from Germany, Europe and the world? Register now for the Summer Academy! On August 9-16, 2019 we will gather in Neudietendorf (near Erfurt), Germany to practice a different form of economics education which we consider more appropriate to our times. We are looking forward to receiving your application!

The Context/Summer Academy

We live in times of unrest. Climate change and environmental destruction, the crisis of the European Union and the rise of right-wing populism, global inequalities, concentration of wealth and precarisation - today’s world is in a mess. We want to work on these issues and seek solutions beyond the narrow confines of the mainstream economy.

Getting there

The Summer Academy takes place at the Zinzendorfhaus in Neudietendorf (next to the city of Erfurt). The conference center is run by Protestant Church in Central Germany: the building is surrounded by a large park and is located at the historical city center.

The Organization Team

We are a group of students from all over Germany (and beyond). We have waited long enough for universities to change curricula in favour of more pluralism and diversity, and are therefore taking matters into our own hands - the Summer Academy is the kind of education we want.
