Understanding technological change
The MINE website explores the interplay between nature and economy. Focusing on such fundamental concepts as time, thermodynamics, evolution, homo politicus and justice, a new outline of economic activity emerges within nature. The dominant approach of Mainstream Economics, which considers nature as a subsystem of the economy, is thus replaced by a broader and more integrated framework. The visual map and its links between concepts provides an orientation. The visitor can approach the content from their own starting point and follow their own path to discovery. Each concept starts with the historical background and moves on through theory and practice.
The research behind MINE began in the 1970s at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, in an interdisciplinary group spearheaded by Professor Malte Faber, including scientists from economics to mathematics, physics and philosophy. The research has contributed to the field of Ecological Economics.

Der Begriff „Subsistenz“ steht in seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung für das „Bestehen aus sich selbst heraus“ bzw. Selbsterhaltung. Dies bildet den Bedeutungskern ganz unterschiedlicher Vorstellungen von „Subsistenz“ in der Fachliteratur (z. B. im Bielefelder Subsistenzansatz). Entgegen der üblichen Darstellungen soll „Subsistenz“ aber nicht z. B. auf Landwirtschaft, karges Leben oder feministische Aspekte reduziert sein, sondern für ganz unterschiedliche Wirtschaftsstile fruchtbar werden. Der modernen Subsistenzperspektive geht es vielmehr darum, Selbsterhaltung ganz allgemein als ein Grundmotiv des Wirtschaftens im theoretischen und praktischen (normativen) Rechtfertigungskontext zu thematisieren. Dafür sind aber begriffliche Spezifikationen notwendig.

Daraus lässt sich das Ziel ableiten, diese gesellschaftlichen Institutionen nach Möglichkeit vorsorglich so zu transformieren, dass sie ihre Funktionen unabhängig(er) von der Wirtschaftsleistung erbringen können. Dies würde der Politik auch größere Spielräume bei Konflikten zwischen ökonomischen und ökologischen Zielen ermöglichen.

It may be helpful to give you a general overview (and a list of basic readings) on the most essential areas of social theory: caste, class, and race; civil society; racism; secularism; feminism and many others.

Die Studie EconPLUS. Zur Pluralität der volkswirtschaftlichen Lehre in Deutschland
Die Ergebnisse der Befragung belegen, dass die Lehrenden von einer Hierarchisierung der in der ökonomischen Analyse auftauchenden Begriffe ausgehen; die hauptsächlich für relevant gehaltenen Begriffe offenbaren hierbei eine spezielle konzeptionelle Sichtweise (Identifikation eines „mainstream“). Laut den Befragten ist der Mainstream durch Konzepte und Methoden gekennzeichnet, die sich im Gedankengerüst der neoklassischen Denkschule bewegen. Als relevantestes Merkmal des Mainstreams beschreiben die Befragten das Akteurskonzept des Homo oeconomicus sowie die Kategorien Rationalität, Gleichgewicht, Maximierung und Effizienz.
