Die sozial-ökologische Krisen unserer Zeit machen deutlich: Suffizienz als Schlüsselprinzip politischen Handelns ist notwendig. Jedoch sind die Auswirkungen tiefgreifender Suffizienzpolitik auf unsere Ökonomie bisher zu wenig verstanden.

Ziel dieser kritischen Einführung in die Volkswirtschaft ist es, auf knappem Raum unterschiedliche Sichtweisen auf wirtschaftliche Zusammenhänge darzulegen und damit die Basis für ein differenziertes Verständnis von Ökonomie und wirtschaftspolitischen Debatten zu liefern. In Zeiten einer integrierten Weltwirtschaft, rascher Veränderungen und internationaler Krisen liegt es nahe, Wirtschaft in ihrer internationalen Dimension in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen, anstatt wie gehabt meist nationale Ökonomien isoliert zu betrachten. Miteinander asymmetrisch verbundene Entwicklungen und Veränderungen in Nord und Süd, die auf globaler sowie zwischen nationaler und regionaler Ebene stattfinden, stellen somit einen zentralen Bezugspunkt dar. Daher der Titel des Buches: Ökonomie und internationale Entwicklung.

First historical instances of colonialism such as the crusades are revisited. Then a lengthy account of the colonial experience of the Spanish Kingdom in South America and of the British Empire in India is given. The Indian case is illustrated with large amounts of archival materials from a colonial administrator. There the workings of the colonial bureaucracy and law and its (positive) achievements as well as the ignorance and arrogance of the external rulers are demonstrated. After narrating the Indian independence to some depth some recent colonial wars (Algeria, Vietnam, Congo, Angola) are briefly examined. In the end, the impact of colonialism on current, i.e. 1970s, (economic) international relations is discussed. The general tenor is that colonialism is a dysfunctional system. Still, agency is mostly placed with the empire rather than with the ruled.

Die Wirtschaftswissenschaft steht heute im neoklassischen Paradigma, sie kann aber viel mehr als die meisten wissen. Im Laufe der Wirtschaftsgeschichte musste sich die ökonomische Theorie immer wieder neuen Herausforderungen stellen, neue Fragestellungen beantworten, ihre Zielsetzung und Wertkataloge hinterfragen und anpassen.

Das Seminar wirft einen historischen Blick auf Fragen ökonomischer Entwicklung und ökonomischer Theorie und verbindet eine Einführung in die Wirtschaftsgeschichte mit einer vergleichenden Diskussion unterschiedlicher ökonomischer Denkrichtungen und Theorien.

This course introduces students to the relevance of gender relations in economics as a discipline and in economic processes and outcomes. The course covers three main components of gender in economics and the economy: (1) the gendered nature of the construction and reproduction of economic theory and thought; (2) the relevance and role of gender in economic decision-making; and (3) differences in economic outcomes based on gender. We will touch on the relevance of gender and gender relations in at least each of the following topics: economic theory; the history of economic thought; human capital accumulation; labor market discrimination; macroeconomic policy, including gender budgeting; household economics; basic econometrics; economic history; and economic crises.
