Most mainstream neoclassical economists completely failed to anticipate the crisis which broke in 2007 and 2008. There is however a long tradition of economic analysis which emphasises how growth in a capitalist economy leads to an accumulation of tensions and results in periodic crises. This paper first reviews the work of Karl Marx who was one of the first writers to incorporate an analysis of periodic crisis in his analysis of capitalist accumulation. The paper then considers the approach of various subsequent Marxian writers, most of whom locate periodic cyclical crises within the framework of longer-term phases of capitalist development, the most recent of which is generally seen as having begun in the 1980s. The paper also looks at the analyses of Thorstein Veblen and Wesley Claire Mitchell, two US institutionalist economists who stressed the role of finance and its contribution to generating periodic crises, and the Italian Circuitist writers who stress the problematic challenge of ensuring that bank advances to productive enterprises can successfully be repaid.

Ist das BIP wirklich der Wert, an welchem wir den Fortschritt eines Landes und einer Gesellschaft messen sollten? Wir sollten über den Punkt hinaus kommen, an welchem wirtschaftlicher Erfolg mit Wirtschaftswachstum und gesellschaftlichem Fortschritt gleichgesetzt wird. Stattdessen könnte die Art, wie wir wirtschaften, als Mittel zum Zweck für eine Gesellschaft dienen, die ihren Wohlstand neu definiert und nicht mehr von quantitativem Wachstum abhängig macht.
Manipulation liegt vor, wenn Beeinflussung verdeckt, zielgerichtet und absichtsvoll erfolgt. Wendet man Kenntnisse der Kognitionswissenschaften und der Beeinflussungsforschung auf ökonomische Standardlehrbücher an, wird deutlich, wie sehr diese Bücher die Schwächen der Studierenden im Hinblick auf ihre Fähigkeit zur kritischen Reflexion ausnutzen.
Ökonomische Ungleichheiten und große Unterschiede in den Lebensbedingungen sind für die Europäische Union (EU) eine wachsende politische Herausforderung. Die Unterschiede in den Einkommen führen zu verstärkter Arbeitsmigration sowie zu Lohn- und Sozialdumping – und sie treiben den Standortwettbewerb zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten an. Hierbei geht es oft um ökonomische Indikatoren, das heißt um Messgrößen, die über die jeweilige wirtschaftliche Situation oder Struktur der Länder Auskunft geben; Fragen der Lebensqualität und des gesellschaftlichen Wohlergehens erhalten unter diesem Blickwinkel innerhalb der EU hingegen kaum Aufmerksamkeit.

Kilian de Ridder argumentiert in diesem Text, dass die EZB in ihrer aktuellen Konstruktion eine Institution ist, die aus heute überholten Theorien heraus entstanden ist. Die EZB hat das Mandat der Preisstabilität, was bedeutet, sie zielt auf eine niedrige, aber positive Inflation von 2 Prozent ab. Das hauptsächliche Instrument, das wir ihr für die Erfüllung dieses Mandats an die Hand gegeben haben, ist der Leitzins. Dieser stellt sich als überraschend unpraktisch für dieses Ziel heraus, weil er keine spezifischen Sektoren adressieren kann, sondern nur die gesamte Wirtschaft.
Die Volkswirtschaftslehre begnügt sich damit, eine Lehre der Mechanik des aktuellen Wirtschaftssystems zu sein, eine Art Kapitalistik. Es war fahrlässig, bei dieser geschichts- und zukunftslosen Wirtschaftswissenschaft stehenzubleiben. Die derzeit geltenden rechtlichen Begrenzungen von Staatsverschuldung basieren auf Mythen, die nicht ökonomisch fundiert sind.
