This course will introduce key concepts, theories and methods from socioeconomics. The first part of the course, will deal with the main economic actors and how their interactions are governed. Markets are seen as sets of social institutions. Institutions shape how consumers, firms and other economic actors behave. B. Einseitigkeit in Forschung und Lehre, hierarchische Strukturierung, geringe Beachtung sozial- wissenschaftlicher Forschung und interdisziplinärer Ansätze) als auch auf gesellschafts- und wirtschaftspolitische Entwicklungen (z. B. Ökonomisierung sozialer und politischer Bereiche, einseitige Einflussnahme durch Expertengremien und Think Tanks).
Zum Profil der deutschsprachigen Volkswirtschaftslehre
Ist das BIP wirklich der Wert, an welchem wir den Fortschritt eines Landes und einer Gesellschaft messen sollten? Wir sollten über den Punkt hinaus kommen, an welchem wirtschaftlicher Erfolg mit Wirtschaftswachstum und gesellschaftlichem Fortschritt gleichgesetzt wird. Stattdessen könnte die Art, wie wir wirtschaften, als Mittel zum Zweck für eine Gesellschaft dienen, die ihren Wohlstand neu definiert und nicht mehr von quantitativem Wachstum abhängig macht.

Eine kritische Transformative Wissenschaft dagegen müsste eine Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Transformationsverständnisse und -ziele zulassen. Transformative Wissenschaft wäre dann eine Plattform, auf der kritische Stränge der Natur- und Ingenieurs- sowie der Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften sich begegnen und unterschiedliche Veränderungsvorstellungen diskutieren können. Dazu zählt auch ein kapitalismus- und herrschaftskritisches Transformationsverständnis.
Kann eine Transformative Wissenschaft die Klimakrise aufhalten?
Neue Ansätze zur Lösung der Klimakrise sind von den dominanten Strömungen der VWL nicht zu erwarten. Stattdessen verbleiben diese in einer Modellwelt, in der katastrophale Klimafolgen zu berechenbaren Risiken werden und politische Realitäten und Machtinteressen ausgeblendet bleiben. In der Folge werden konkrete Fragen, etwa nach der Umgestaltung des Verkehrssystems und einem ökologischen und global gerechten Ernährungssystem, gar nicht erst gestellt. Die implizite Antwort bleibt: Der Markt wird es richten.

How countries achieve long-term GDP growth is up there with the most important topics in economics. As Nobel Laureate Robert Lucas put it “the consequences for human welfare involved in questions like these are simply staggering: once one starts to think about them, it is hard to think about anything else.” Ricardo Hausmann et al take a refreshing approach to this question in their Atlas of Economic Complexity. They argue a country’s growth depends on the complexity of its economy: it must have a diverse economy which produces a wide variety of products, including ones that cannot be produced much elsewhere. The Atlas goes into detail on exactly what complexity means, how it fits the data, and what this implies for development. Below I will offer a summary of their arguments, including some cool data visualisations.
GDP Growth: It’s Complicated
One method of economic modelling that has become increasingly popular in academia, government and the private sector is Agent Based Models, or ABM. These simulate the actions and interactions of thousands or even millions of people to try to understand the economy – for this reason ABM was once described to me as being “like Sim City without the graphics”. One advantage of ABM is that it is flexible, since you can choose how many agents there are (an agent just means some kind of 'economic decision maker' like a firm, consumer, worker or government); how they behave (do they use complicated or simple rules to make decisions?); as well as the environment they act in, then just run the simulation and see what happens as they interact over time.
Agents, agents everywhere
From the two premises that (1) economies are complex systems and (2) the accumulation of knowledge about reality is desirable, I derive the conclusion that pluralism with regard to economic research programs is a more viable position to hold than monism. To substantiate this claim an epistemological framework of how scholars study their objects of inquiry and relate their models to reality is discussed. Furthermore, it is argued that given the current institutions of our scientific system, economics self-organizes towards a state of scientific unity. Since such a state is epistemologically inferior to a state of plurality, critical intervention is desirable.
The Complexity of Economies and Pluralism in Economics
After completing the module, participants should be able to have general overview on the theory of commons. They can differentiate between neoclassical, new institutional and social/critical commons theory and can use these theories to assess real life common-pool resource management and commoning pratices.

Die Evolutionäre und Institutionelle Ökonomie ist ein ökonomisches Paradigma, in welchem sozialer und ökonomischer Wandel eine zentrale Bedeutung einnehmen. In dieser heterodoxen Rolle außerhalb des wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Mainstreams sehen einige die Evolutionsökonomie als eine Teildisziplin der Wirtschaftswissenschaften, die sich mit dynamischen Aspekten wirtschaftlichen Austausches befasst; für andere stellt sie eine Revolution wirtschaftstheoretischen Denkens dar. (vgl. Berendt/Glückler: 13 f.) Die Institutionelle Ökonomie zeigt Erklärungsansätze für wirtschaftliche Prozesse auf und betont, dass diese nicht ausschließlich durch „individuelles Rationalverhalten“ geprägt werden. Die Notwendigkeit von Institutionen wird betont, da ein individuelles, rationales Verhalten zu einer negativen Beeinflussung der Gemeinschaft führen kann und somit die Lösung über Institutionen erfolgen muss. Die Wirtschaftswissenschaft steht heute im neoklassischen Paradigma, sie kann aber viel mehr als die meisten wissen. Im Laufe der Wirtschaftsgeschichte musste sich die ökonomische Theorie immer wieder neuen Herausforderungen stellen, neue Fragestellungen beantworten, ihre Zielsetzung und Wertkataloge hinterfragen und anpassen.

Health Economics traditionally involves two distinct strands. One focuses on the application of core neoclassical economic theories of the firm, the consumer and the market to health-seeking behaviour and other health issues. It suggests a role for government intervention only in the case of specific market failures (for example externalities, asymmetric information, moral hazard, and public goods) that distort market outcomes. The second strand is evaluation techniques, used to assess the cost effectiveness of competing health interventions.
