By conducting a discourse analysis (SKAD) in the field of academic economics textbooks, this paper aims at reconstructing frames and identity options offered to undergraduate students relating to the questions ‘Why study economics?’ and ‘Who do I become by studying economics?’. The analysis showed three major frames and respective identity offerings, all of which are contextualized theoretically, with prominent reference to the Foucauldian reflection of the science of Political Economy. Surprisingly, none of them encourages the student to think critically, as could have been expected in a pedagogical context. Taken together, economics textbooks appear as a “total structure of actions brought to bear upon possible action” (Foucault), therefore, as a genuine example of Foucauldian power structures.
The power of economic textbooks: A discourse analysis
This essay draws on several analyses on the gender impact of the recession and of austerity policies, in which authors acknowledge a threat to women’s labour market integration and a potential backlash to traditional gender labour structures. We contribute to that literature by asking whether recession and austerity convey a gender effect on educational attainment. Our aim in this essay is to portray the likely effects of austerity measures on gender equality with a focus on women’s participation in tertiary education and to hypothesize the implications of these scenarios for labour market effects, to be tested in future empirical research.

In der Diskussion um ein bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen (bGE) erscheint es als Idee „ohne Ideologie“, das über unterschiedliche politische Lager hinweg befürwortet wird. Das täuscht. Wenn wir nicht anfangen, unter der Vielzahl an Vorschlägen zu unterscheiden und nur über die abstrakte „Idee“ diskutieren, spielen wir neoliberalem Denken in die Hände, das Grundeinkommen für die Erhaltung sozialer Ungerechtigkeit instrumentalisiert. Die jüngste Debatte um ein „solidarisches Grundeinkommen“ zeigt: Der positiv belegte Begriff ist längst gekapert – wo „Grundeinkommen“ drauf steht, kann inzwischen alles mögliche drin sein.

Ben Fine dedicates the first half of his comprehensible lecture to the question on how mainstream economics became the way it is by explaining its key concepts and how those evolved during the past 150 years. While critically reflecting those concept he also emphasizes that mainstream economics does not consider historical processes. This is the point of departure on his presentation of the core terms and crucial categories of Marxist Political Economy: e.g. the production process and class relations (Part 1). Part 2 examines the consequences of the capitalist mode of production and its propensity to crises. Ben Fine illustrates this Marxist analysis with the example of the current crisis and explains current conditions for the accumulation of capital.

Der Begriff „Subsistenz“ steht in seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung für das „Bestehen aus sich selbst heraus“ bzw. Selbsterhaltung. Dies bildet den Bedeutungskern ganz unterschiedlicher Vorstellungen von „Subsistenz“ in der Fachliteratur (z. B. im Bielefelder Subsistenzansatz). Entgegen der üblichen Darstellungen soll „Subsistenz“ aber nicht z. B. auf Landwirtschaft, karges Leben oder feministische Aspekte reduziert sein, sondern für ganz unterschiedliche Wirtschaftsstile fruchtbar werden. Der modernen Subsistenzperspektive geht es vielmehr darum, Selbsterhaltung ganz allgemein als ein Grundmotiv des Wirtschaftens im theoretischen und praktischen (normativen) Rechtfertigungskontext zu thematisieren. Dafür sind aber begriffliche Spezifikationen notwendig.
Ökonomik ohne Existenznotwendigkeit?
Die ökonomische Theorie hat mit Moral wenig oder gar nichts zu tun. In den gängigen Lehrbüchern der Mikroökonomie findet sich in den Stichwortverzeichnissen kein Eintrag zu Moral oder Ethik. Die Studierenden lernen über die Wirtschaft nachzudenken, aber sie lernen dabei nicht, systematisch über ethische Fragen zu reflektieren. Nach der neoklassischen Lehre, wie sie in den Lehrbüchern präsentiert wird, weist wirtschaftliches Handeln nicht grundsätzlich moralische Aspekte auf.

Does Karl Polanyi's work “The Great Transformation” serve to analyse the current multiple crisis and social movements? Nancy Fraser revises Polanyi's concept of a double movement to capture social forces in the aftermath of the economic crisis of the 1930s – on the one side marketization and on the other hand social protection. Fraser proposes to talk about a triple movement and to account for emancipatory struggles. In the lecture, she discusses interactions as well as conflicts between those three forces, in particular conflicting aims of social protection. The lecture presents the content of her paper “A TRIPLE MOVEMENT? Parsing the Politics of Crisis after Polanyi“ in the New Left Review (2013).
