Das Modell des homo oeconomicus erklärt in der Mainstream-Ökonomik das Verhalten des Individuums nach der Logik der Situation. Auch wenn Vertreter*innen des Konzepts betonen, dass es sich um eine wissenschaftliche Abstraktion handelt, fungiert der homo oeconomicus auf der gesellschaftlichen Makroebene jedoch als repräsentativer Akteur und stellt somit eine Reduktion des Menschen dar. Spätestens seit der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 gibt es eine breite Kritik an dem dominanten Paradigma der Neoklassik und seiner Lehre. Wie die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt, ist diese Kritik mehr als berechtigt. Diese exemplarische Beobachtung und Analyse einer Einführungsveranstaltung an einer der größten Universitäten Deutschlands zeigt, dass die wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Lehre Prinzipien wie dem Kontroversitätsgebot, die jede sozialwissenschaftliche Lehre erfüllen sollte, nicht gerecht wird. Stattdessen wird weiterhin einseitig in die Neoklassik und ihre Modelle eingeführt, ohne Reflexion ihrer Grundannahmen oder Behandlung ihrer Kritik.

Dabei habe ich versucht, Ansätze aus unterschiedlichen Paradigmen zu berücksichtigen, notwendigerweise auf Kosten einer gewissen Tiefe bei den einzelnen Modellierungsframeworks. Der Kurs setzt ein gewisses mathematisches Grundverständnis voraus, sollte aber für fortgeschrittene Bachelor-Studierende der Ökonomik und Master-Studierende von interdisziplinären Studienprogrammen gut geeignet sein. Die Themenauswahl ist natürlich notwendigerweise selektiv. Der erste, größere Abschnitt diskutiert Modelle für wirtschaftlichen Wandel in der langen Frist (Wachstumsmodelle). Der zweite, kürzere Abschnitte behandelt dann Modelle, welche versuchen eine langfristige mit einer kurzfristigen Perspektive zu verbinden.

Austerity has been at the center of political controversy following the 2008 financial crisis, invoked by politicians and academics across the political spectrum as the answer to, or cause of, our post-crash economic malaise.

The documentary proceeds along the lines of Karl Marx' biography, inquiring into his workings as a journalist, social scientist, revolutionary and historian and his travels through Europe. In chronological order historical events, such as the 1848 revolution or the Paris Commune as well as concepts such as dialectics, the labour theory of value or the reform-revolution debate are revisited. The documentary is narrated by John Kenneth Galbraith and by an actor, who plays Marx and recites quotes from his writings.

In order to address discrimination, we must understand and address its fundamental basis of systemic oppression. Stratification economics goes beyond myopic mainstream conceptualisations of discrimination and recognises the historical, institutional, and structural factors that create and maintain socioeconomic disparities and hierarchies. To critically approach the economics of discrimination, this workshop will focus on stratification economics, a systematic and empirically grounded approach to addressing intergroup inequality (Darity, 2005). Focusing on racial discrimination, we will discuss the core elements of stratification economics, critically evaluate its relevance, and apply these understandings to construct case studies and solutions for change. In our discussions, we will consider an array of topics, including intersecting oppressions, reparative justice, and the role of knowledge production in overcoming injustice and creating a better world.
Economics of Discrimination
First historical instances of colonialism such as the crusades are revisited. Then a lengthy account of the colonial experience of the Spanish Kingdom in South America and of the British Empire in India is given. The Indian case is illustrated with large amounts of archival materials from a colonial administrator. There the workings of the colonial bureaucracy and law and its (positive) achievements as well as the ignorance and arrogance of the external rulers are demonstrated. After narrating the Indian independence to some depth some recent colonial wars (Algeria, Vietnam, Congo, Angola) are briefly examined. In the end, the impact of colonialism on current, i.e. 1970s, (economic) international relations is discussed. The general tenor is that colonialism is a dysfunctional system. Still, agency is mostly placed with the empire rather than with the ruled.
