Die Studie untersucht, wie Studierende der Volkswirtschaftslehre (VWL) an deutschen Hochschulen ihr Fach und die Pluralismusdebatte wahrnehmen. Schriftlich befragt wurden 351 Studierende der VWL im vierten Semester an den Universitäten Bonn, Frankfurt/M., Hamburg, Heidelberg und Mannheim.
Wie denken Studierende über die Pluralismusdebatte in der Volkswirtschaftslehre?
Der Klimawandel – beziehungsweise die Emission von Treibhausgasen – hat gegenläufige Effekte auf die gesellschaftliche Wohlfahrt. Einerseits emittieren wir Treibhausgase, um Wohlfahrt stiftende Aktivitäten auszuüben (Mobilität, Ernährung, Wärmeerzeugung etc.). Andererseits verändert die zunehmende THG- Konzentration klimatische Systeme, wodurch die Wohlfahrt der in der Zukunft lebenden Menschen beeinträchtigt wird. Klimaökonom*innen gehen der Herausforderung nach, die beiden Effekte zu quantifizieren und zu bestimmen, wie viele Treibhausgase zu welchem Zeitpunkt in der Zukunft emittiert werden sollten, damit die gesellschaftliche Wohlfahrt über mehrere Generationen hinweg maximiert wird.

Andererseits spielen aufgrund der heutigen Verfasstheit der früh industrialisierten, wohlhabenden Länder die Wirtschaftsleistung und die damit generierten Einkommen eine wichtige Rolle. Daraus lässt sich das Ziel ableiten, diese gesellschaftlichen Institutionen nach Möglichkeit vorsorglich so zu transformieren, dass sie ihre Funktionen unabhängig(er) von der Wirtschaftsleistung erbringen können. Dies würde der Politik auch größere Spielräume bei Konflikten zwischen ökonomischen und ökologischen Zielen ermöglichen.

Die Ergebnisse der Befragung belegen, dass die Lehrenden von einer Hierarchisierung der in der ökonomischen Analyse auftauchenden Begriffe ausgehen; die hauptsächlich für relevant gehaltenen Begriffe offenbaren hierbei eine spezielle konzeptionelle Sichtweise (Identifikation eines „mainstream“). Laut den Befragten ist der Mainstream durch Konzepte und Methoden gekennzeichnet, die sich im Gedankengerüst der neoklassischen Denkschule bewegen. Als relevantestes Merkmal des Mainstreams beschreiben die Befragten das Akteurskonzept des Homo oeconomicus sowie die Kategorien Rationalität, Gleichgewicht, Maximierung und Effizienz.

Dies deutet darauf hin, dass sich die grundsätzliche Kritik an den Lehrinhalten bis dato kaum zu einer Kritik an den einschlägigen Lehrbüchern weiterentwickelt hat (vgl. Urban/Van Treek 2016).
