COVID-19 and Economic Development in Latin America

This paper is a product of an online workshop held in Nigeria on the topic Unemployment: Policy Review and Recommendations. It explores the various unemployment policies introduced by the Nigerian Government and analysis how effective they are and suggests some practicable solutions to solving unemployment problems in the country. Inflation ist eines der wichtigsten Themen der gegenwärtigen Wirtschaftsdebatten. Der Begriff wird jedoch sehr unterschiedlich verwendet. Lars Weisbrod zeigt, dass sich hinter dem Begriff "Inflation" zwei Typen von Inflation verbergen, die in öffentlichen Debatten oft verwechselt werden: Angebots- und Nachfrageinflation. Um diese beiden Konzepte auseinanderzuhalten, schlägt der Autor die Bezeichnungen Teuerung und Geldentwertung vor.

"Yuliya Yurchenko is a senior lecturer and researcher in political economy at University of Greenwich. She is currently in Ukraine on an extraordinary leave. And while she writes that she is, for the moment, in relative safety, that could change any moment. Being a Ukrainian, an activist and an academic, Yuliya traveled to Ukraine on Feb 19, 2022 as part of a fact-finding and solidarity mission with a number of MPs, trade unionists and journalists. The goal, she says, of this mission is to connect with civil society organizations, trade unions, activists and politicians, and “to express direct, cross-border solidarity from the UK working class to the Ukrainian working class.”

Eine kritische Transformative Wissenschaft dagegen müsste eine Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Transformationsverständnisse und -ziele zulassen. Transformative Wissenschaft wäre dann eine Plattform, auf der kritische Stränge der Natur- und Ingenieurs- sowie der Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften sich begegnen und unterschiedliche Veränderungsvorstellungen diskutieren können. Dazu zählt auch ein kapitalismus- und herrschaftskritisches Transformationsverständnis.

Das Konzept der „Klimaschulden“ verstärkt das Argument, laut dem durch eine verengte Fokussierung auf die Schuldenbremse sinnvolle Investitionen blockiert werden können. Dabei sind Klimaschulden nur ein Beispiel für Kosten, die im BIP bislang nicht berücksichtigt werden. Ein Beitrag von Benjamin Held.

In the interview, Robert Skidelsky discusses the emergence of political influence of a certain school of economic thought and how the success of an economic theory depends on the power relations in the society. He introduces the historical example of Keynesian economics and its replacement by liberal economic theory and policy in the aftermath of the Great Depression, and transfers this historical case to the dominant paradigm of austerity policies in the Europe as response to rising public debts caused by the Financial Crisis. He contrasts austerity policies with a Keynesian approach. Furthermore, he relates the targets of policy to the underlying power structures, for example when not the reduction of unemployment but the protection of financial capital is politically addressed.
