Hartmut Kliemt first traces the concept of the homo oeconomicus back to the philosophy of Spinoza and Hobbes. Then he addresses criticisms of this concept in particular by discussing the ultimatum game as a strong piece of counterevidence. After this, he outlines a difference in the behavioural sciences between internal perspectives that seek to understand actors' cognitive processes and external perspectives, which look at observed behaviour only.

Die Vorlesung beginnt mit einer kurzen Übersicht zur Kritik an der Mainstream Ökonomik. Dabei wird Konzept der unsichtbaren Hand in den historischen Kontext gesetzt und einige der Annahmen und Inkonsistenzen der allgemeinen Gleichgewichtstheorie dargestellt. Der Hauptteil der Vorlesung beschäftigt sich mit Kooperations und Anti-Kooperationsspielen. Im Besonderen wird auf die Bedeutung bzw. die Möglichkeit von Rationalität in den Spielen eingegangen. Die betrachteten Spiele sind das Gefangenendilemma, Stag Hunt, Chicken, Battle of the sexes, und Taube/Falke. In der Diskussion der evolutionären Spieltheorie wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die Auswirkungen Häufigkeit eines Akteurs in einer Population gelegt. Die Vorlesung endet mit einem kurzen Exkurs zu den Eigenschaften von verschiedenen komplexen Systemen, u.a. power law Verteilungen.

Eine Koordinationsstrategie umfasst das ausgerichtete Handeln, welches im Rahmen der Entscheidungs- und Handlungswahl zwischen verschiedenen Teilnehmern einer Gruppe zum Einklang der individuellen Präferenzen mit den gemeinschaftlichen Zielen der Gruppe führt.

Für die Spieltheorie bedeutet eine kritische Masse, dass nicht die gesamte Gruppe von einer Strategie überzeugt werden muss, sondern dass es ausreicht, eine bestimmte Anzahl von Teilnehmern von dieser Strategie zu überzeugen. Ist dieser Schwellenwert überschritten, die kritische Masse erreicht, wird sich diese Strategie selbsttragend durchsetzen.
