The article pursues the two related questions of how economists pretend to know and why they want to know at all. It is argued that both the economic form of knowledge and the motivation of knowing have undergone a fundamental change during the course of the 20th century. The knowledge of important contemporary economic textbooks has little in common with an objective, decidedly scientifically motivated knowledge. Rather, their contents and forms follow a productive end, aiming at the subjectivity of their readers. 2019 Level: leicht An essay on the putative knowledge of textbook economics Lukas Bäuerle Institute of Economics and Philosophy Cusanus Hochschule Die Evolutionäre und Institutionelle Ökonomie ist ein ökonomisches Paradigma, in welchem sozialer und ökonomischer Wandel eine zentrale Bedeutung einnehmen. Nee, 2005: 49 ff) 2022 Level: leicht Evolutionäre und institutionelle Ökonomie Hochmayr, Luger, Eisner Exploring Economics This article outlines the fundamental challenges of democratically planned economies and categorises proposed models into six groups, each of which approaches planning and coordination at different levels of authority and between myriad economic units in a particular way, taking into account efficiency as well as democratic principles and environmental and social sustainability. Through a classification system based on decision-making authority and mediation mechanisms, the article provides a framework for understanding and comparing these models. By examining their different approaches, it offers insights into the complexities and potential paths of democratically planned economies in the 21st century. 2024 Level: leicht Rethinking Democratic Economic Planning: An Overview Jakob Heyer Exploring Economics This chapter by the Centre of Economy Studies provides a map through the complex jungle of economic theories. Dennis Venter, Arpitha Varma Exploring Economics The global financial crisis (GFC) led to increasing distrust in economic research and the economics profession, in the process of which the current state of economics and economic education in particular were heavily criticized. Michelle Meixieira Groenewald Summer Academy 2022 for Pluralist Economics Complexity economics focuses on interactions and interdependencies between individuals and structures in economic systems. Those are systems of organised complexity. High importance is given to the analysis of networks. Complexity Economics     Der Fokus der Komplexitätsökonomik liegt auf den Interaktionen und Wechselwirkungen zwischen Individuen und Strukturen wirtschaftlicher Systeme. Diese werden als Systeme organisierter Komplexität aufgefasst. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Analyse von Netzwerken. Komplexitätsökonomik     This essay suggests to bring together two aspects of economic thought which so far have developed largely separately: degrowth and feminist economics. In this strive, the concept of care work and its role in feminist economics will be introduced and the downsides of the commodification of care work will be discussed. Subsequently, contributions to the discussion on the (re)valuation of care work will be taken into account. 2017 Level: leicht Who cares? A convergence of feminist economics and degrowth Jannis Eicker, Katharina Keil Exploring Economics Health Economics traditionally involves two distinct strands. One focuses on the application of core  neoclassical economic theories of the firm, the consumer and the market to health-seeking behaviour  and other health issues. It suggests a role for government intervention only in the case of specific  market failures (for example externalities, asymmetric information, moral hazard, and public goods)  that distort market outcomes. The second strand is evaluation techniques, used to assess the cost effectiveness of competing health interventions. 2022 Level: leicht Health Economics Julia Ngozi Chukwuma Summer Academy 2022 for Pluralist Economics This essay deals with the concepts of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) and Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). 2018 Level: leicht The importance of a Land Degradation Neutrality approach to achieving Sustainable Land Management Pınar Topçu Exploring Economics An essay of the writing workshop on Nigeria’s Readiness for and the Effect of the Fourth Industrial Revolution 2020 Level: mittel The Role of Women in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Peter Ogundairo Exploring Economics Der Fokus der Verhaltensökonomik liegt auf dem beobachtbaren Verhalten von Menschen und deren Entscheidungen. Mainstream economics has propagated the dismantling of the state and the globalization of production - both of which make the crisis now so devastating. More fundamentally, mainstream economics deals with market systems, when what is needed to limit the virus’s spread is a command system. 2020 Level: leicht The Coronavirus and the End of Economics Steve Keen Exploring Economics In 18th century Europe figures such as Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Friedrich List and Jean Baptiste Colbert developed theories regarding international trade, which either embraced free trade seeing it as a positive sum game or recommended more cautious and strategic approaches to trade seeing it as a potential danger and a rivalry and often as a zero-sum game. Whereas economists favour mathematical models and statistics, qualitative research seeks to understand the world through intensive investigation of particular circumstances, which usually entails interviewing people directly about their experiences. While this may sound simple to quantitative types the style, purpose, context, and interpretation of an interview can vary widely. Because of this variety, I have written a longer post than usual on this topic rather than doing it a disservice. Having said that, examples of qualitative research in economics are sadly scant enough that it doesn’t warrant multiple posts. In this post I will introduce qualitative research in general with nods to several applications including the study of firm behaviour, race, Austrian economics, and health economics. More than usual I will utilise block quotes, which I feel is in the spirit of the topic. 2020 Level: leicht Qualitative Methods in Economics: "You Can Observe a Lot Just by Watching" Cahal Moran Rethinking Economics Introduction Economics is by necessity a multi paradigmatic science Several theoretical structures exist side by side and each theory can never be more than a partial theory Rothschild 1999 Likening scientific work to the self coordinating invisible hand of the market Michael Polanyi cautioned strongly against centralized attempts to steer … 2021 Level: leicht Making Many Maps: Why We Need an Interested Pluralism in Economics and How to Get There Patrick Leon Gross Patrick Léon Gross This paper is a product of an online workshop held in Nigeria on the topic Unemployment: Policy Review and Recommendations. Particularly, the Italian cooperative sector’s contributions to three aspects should be noted in closing. Firstly, the innovative phenomenon of cooperative enterprises has contributed to social inclusion of immigrant communities, the activation of youth, the unemployed and people with disabilities, a true compensation for both a market and state failure. Secondly, they have contributed to a reduction in income and wealth inequalities at a time when the issue of inequality is of global significance. Thirdly, the Italian cooperative movement has helped local communities revitalize in the face of demographic shifts and rendered them more resilient to the ravages of globalization. Each of these in their own right is a remarkable achievement. 2020 Level: leicht How to strengthen the social economy Jerome Warren Exploring Economics The term "de-risking" can be seen as one element of a strategy aimed at discursively reframing the trade policy confrontation with China.
