The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is rapidly spreading around the world. The real economy is simultaneously hit by a supply shock and a demand shock by the spread of coronavirus. Such a twin shock is a rare phenomenon in recent economic history. 2020 Level: beginner How to Manage the Economic Fallout of the Coronavirus Kavaljit Singh Madhyam This is an overview of (possibly transformative) proposals to address the economic consequences of the corona crisis 2020 Level: beginner Overview of proposals to combat the economic consequences of the Corona crisis Hannes Böhm, Anne Löscher & Jorim Gerrard Exploring Economics One of the pluralist theories which has gained prominence following the 2008 financial crisis is Hyman Minsky and his Financial Instability Hypothesis (FIH). Minsky was unique in viewing balance sheets and financial flows as the primary components of capitalist economies, and his focus on the financial system meant he was well-equipped for foresee a crisis much like 2008. Although he died long before 2008 his framework anticipated many of the processes which led to the crash, particularly increased risk-taking and financial innovation which would outstrip the abilities of regulators and central banks to manage the system. 2020 Level: beginner Minsky’s Moments Cahal Moran Rethinking Economics Feminist economics is a key component of the movement for pluralism in economics and one that has, to some extent, been acknowledged by the mainstream of the profession. It seeks to highlight issues which affect women because (it claims) they have not traditionally been recognised in a field dominated by men. On top of this, it seeks to carve out a space for women in the discipline, both for intrinsic reasons of fairness and diversity and because it means that women’s issues are more likely to be highlighted going forward. 2020 Level: beginner Why Feminist Economics is Necessary Cahal Moran Rethinking Economics An essay of the writing workshop on Nigeria’s Readiness for and the Effect of the Fourth Industrial Revolution 2020 Level: advanced The Role of Women in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Peter Ogundairo Exploring Economics From the two premises that (1) economies are complex systems and (2) the accumulation of knowledge about reality is desirable, I derive the conclusion that pluralism with regard to economic research programs is a more viable position to hold than monism. To substantiate this claim an epistemological framework of how scholars study their objects of inquiry and relate their models to reality is discussed. Furthermore, it is argued that given the current institutions of our scientific system, economics self-organizes towards a state of scientific unity. Since such a state is epistemologically inferior to a state of plurality, critical intervention is desirable. 2017 Level: advanced The Complexity of Economies and Pluralism in Economics Claudius Gräbner Johannes Kepler University Linz (ICAE) and University of Duisburg-Essen (IfSO), Journal of Contextual Economics This study aims to provide insights on how the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is contributing to the future of work. 2019 Level: beginner The Contribution of the Social and Solidarity Economy and Social Finance to the Future of Work Bénédicte Fonteneau & Ignace Pollet International Labour Organization The article pursues the two related questions of how economists pretend to know and why they want to know at all. It is argued that both the economic form of knowledge and the motivation of knowing have undergone a fundamental change during the course of the 20th century. The knowledge of important contemporary economic textbooks has little in common with an objective, decidedly scientifically motivated knowledge. Rather, their contents and forms follow a productive end, aiming at the subjectivity of their readers. 2019 Level: beginner An essay on the putative knowledge of textbook economics Lukas Bäuerle Institute of Economics and Philosophy Cusanus Hochschule Central banking is anything but clear-cut. As this webinar with Benjamin Braun demonstrates, the standard view of central banks as independent public entities that govern financial markets and "print" money is at least partially misleading. 2020 Level: beginner Central banking, Finance and Power Benjamin Braun crashcourseeconomics.org The outbreak of COVID-19 has substantially accelerated the digitalization of the economy. Yet, this unprecedented growth of digital technology brought novel challenges to the labour market. Rise in income inequalities and precarious working conditions or polarization of jobs. In this essay, we try to assess what tools to use to counter these trends. 2021 Level: beginner Post-pandemic future of work - How does digitization impact labour? Neha Chauhan, Miguel Corredera, Krystian Lukasik, Filipa Reis Exploring Economics What made the false assumption that saving the economy at all cost during a pandemic so popular? This paper discusses different pathways through the COVID-19 pandemic at national and international level, and their consequences on the health of citizens and their economies. 2021 Level: beginner How not to save the economy? The interplay of economics and health during the COVID-19 pandemic Vera Leuner, Navaneeth M S, Leandro Pereira Monteiro, Eduardo Lacerda Camargo Bisneto Exploring Economics Health Economics traditionally involves two distinct strands. One focuses on the application of core  neoclassical economic theories of the firm, the consumer and the market to health-seeking behaviour  and other health issues. It suggests a role for government intervention only in the case of specific  market failures (for example externalities, asymmetric information, moral hazard, and public goods)  that distort market outcomes. The second strand is evaluation techniques, used to assess the cost effectiveness of competing health interventions. 2022 Level: beginner Health Economics Julia Ngozi Chukwuma Summer Academy 2022 for Pluralist Economics Fighting Neoliberalism with Keynes & Minsky? Stratification economics integrates economics, sociology and social psychology to distinctively analyze inequality across groups that are socially differentiated, be it by race, ethnicity, gender, caste, sexuality, religion or any other social differentiation. 2021 Level: beginner Stratification Economics Tanita Lewis, Nyamekye Asare, Benjamin Fields Exploring Economics The concept of financialisation has undergone a similar career as ‘globalisation’, ‘neoliberalism’ or even ‘capitalism’, in the course of which it changed from the explanandum to the explanans; the process of financialisation is taken for granted, while the concrete historical and empirical causal conditions of its realisation and perpetuation are being moved into the background. 2023 Level: expert A holistic theory of financialisation Samuel Decker Exploring Economics Aim of this intensive workshop is to understand macroeconomic workings of climate change as as the background of sustainable finance; to analyse financial assets with ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria attached to them and their markets and important institutional players; to develop a critical perspective on the current setup of sustainable finance; and to synthesise this knowledge by applying it on in-depth case studies. 2020 Level: beginner Sustainable Finance Anne Löscher Summer Academy for Pluralist Economics Post-Keynesians focus on the analysis of capitalist economies, perceived as highly productive, but unstable and conflictive systems. Economic activity is determined by effective demand, which is typically insufficient to generate full employment and full utilisation of capacity. This book provides a new methodological approach to money and macroeconomics. Realizing that the abstract equilibrium models lacked descriptions of fundamental issues of a modern monetary economy, the focus of this book lies on the (stylized) balance sheets of the main actors. Money, after all, is born on the balance sheets of the central bank or commercial bank. 2017 Level: beginner Modern Monetary Theory and European Macroeconomics Dirk H.
