Just a few years ago, it seemed that a gradual transition from fossil-based to green capitalism was underway. Today, however, the rise of authoritarian politics has fueled backlash and eroded state support for this shift. In her essay, Alyssa Battistoni traces the history of green capitalism, examining how it differs from fossil capitalism and why it emerged in the first place.
