In this TedTalk, Dan O'Neil explains why GDP and infinite growth are concepts that we should leave behind, and which other perspectives have been developed. Degrowth, post-growth, well-being or steady-state economy? The goal is to rethink a new paradigm that puts society and the environment at the core.

Comment from our editors:

I recommend this TedTalk because it clearly sums up the main critiques of GDP growth, and illustrates different alternatives that have been proposed. It also stresses the key factors that a new paradigm should be focused on – society and environment – besides the label or name used for it.

The economics of enough can be crucial in the building of a stable economy, where today's growth is dependent on the increase of debt, as O'Neil demonstrates in this talk. This need for debt accumulation makes us particularly vulnerable to economic downturns and is therefore unsustainable.
