Approaching the law of nature that determines all forms of economy. The bulk of economic theory addresses the economic process by setting out on a catalogue of aspects, seeking the laws in the aspects and hoping to get together a reliable view of the whole. 2019 Level: adelantado Economic theory, methodology, and secure foundations Dr. Alec A. Schaerer Exploring Economics In the history of the social sciences, few individuals have exerted as much influence as has Jeremy Bentham. His attempt to become “the Newton of morals” has left a marked impression upon the methodology and form of analysis that social sciences like economics and political science have chosen as modus operandi. 2020 Level: adelantado Bentham’s Two Sovereign Masters - Examining Bentham’s Influence on the Social Sciences Jerome Warren Exploring Economics Once in a while the world astonishes itself. Anxious incredulity replaces intellectual torpor and a puzzled public strains its antennae in every possible direction, desperately seeking explanations for the causes and nature of what just hit it. 2008 was such a moment. Not only did the financial system collapse, and send the real economy into a tailspin, but it also revealed the great gulf separating economics from a very real capitalism. 2011 Level: adelantado Modern Political Economics Yanis Varoufakis, Joseph Halevi, Nicholas Theocarakis Routledge Steve Keen analyses how mainstream economics fails when confronted with the covid-19-pandemic. Mainstream economics has propagated the dismantling of the state and the globalization of production - both of which make the crisis now so devastating. More fundamentally, mainstream economics deals with market systems, when what is needed to limit the virus’s spread is a command system. 2020 Level: debutante The Coronavirus and the End of Economics Steve Keen Exploring Economics Stratification economics is defined as a systemic and empirically grounded approach to addressing intergroup inequality. Samuel Decker Exploring Economics This paper is a product of an online workshop held in Nigeria on the topic Unemployment: Policy Review and Recommendations. One focuses on the application of core  neoclassical economic theories of the firm, the consumer and the market to health-seeking behaviour  and other health issues. It suggests a role for government intervention only in the case of specific  market failures (for example externalities, asymmetric information, moral hazard, and public goods)  that distort market outcomes. The second strand is evaluation techniques, used to assess the cost effectiveness of competing health interventions. 2022 Level: debutante Health Economics Julia Ngozi Chukwuma Summer Academy 2022 for Pluralist Economics Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) is a school of monetary and macroeconomic thought that focuses on the analysis of the monetary and credit system, and in particular on the question of credit creation by the state. 2020 Level: debutante Modern Monetary Theory Nathalie Freitag Exploring Economics Exploring Economics, an open-access e-learning platform, giving you the opportunity to discover & study a variety of economic theories, topics, and methods. 2021 Level: debutante The Political Economy of Inequalities Jürgen Essletzbichler, Andrea Grisold, Hendrik Theine Exploring Economics Challenging the Mainstream in the Twentieth Century Economics is a contested academic discipline between neoclassical economics and a collection of alternative approaches such as Marxism radical economics Institutional economics Post Keynesian economics and others that can collectively be called heterodox economics Because of the dominance of neoclassical economics the existence … 2011 Level: adelantado A History of Heterodox Economics Frederic S. Yet, when it comes to actual practice, there is extensive discrimination. The under-representation of women in political participation gained root due to the patriarchal practice inherent in our society, much of which were obvious from pre-colonial era till date. Level: debutante Women Participation – Women Contribution to Economics and Politics Mary Otunba Exploring Economics By conducting a discourse analysis (SKAD) in the field of academic economics textbooks, this paper aims at reconstructing frames and identity options offered to undergraduate students relating to the questions ‘Why study economics?’ and ‘Who do I become by studying economics?’. The analysis showed three major frames and respective identity offerings, all of which are contextualized theoretically, with prominent reference to the Foucauldian reflection of the science of Political Economy. Surprisingly, none of them encourages the student to think critically, as could have been expected in a pedagogical context. Taken together, economics textbooks appear as a “total structure of actions brought to bear upon possible action” (Foucault), therefore, as a genuine example of Foucauldian power structures. 2019 Level: debutante The power of economic textbooks: A discourse analysis Lukas Bäuerle Institute of Economics and Philosophy Cusanus Hochschule The chapter by the Centre for Economy Studies introduces interdisciplinary economic subdisciplines and their importance for economics education. 2021 Level: debutante Interdisciplinary Economics Sam de Muijnck and Joris Tieleman Economy Studies A rethinking of the way to fight global poverty and winners of the Swedish Bank Prize for Economics. 2019 Level: adelantado Social Experiments to Alleviate Poverty Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer Exploring Economics After completing the module, participants should be able to understand the economic consequences of gender inequality. After all, problems and imbalances have accumulated in the Western capitalist system over four decades, ostensibly since it took the neoliberal road out of the 1970s crisis and kept going along it, heedless of the crises and problems it led to. 2020 Level: debutante The Unexpected Reckoning: Coronavirus and Capitalism Radhika Desai Canadian Dimesion This paper starts with an evaluation of three common arguments against pluralism in economics: (1) the claim that economics is already pluralist, (2) the argument that if there was the need for greater plurality, it would emerge on its own, and (3) the assertion that pluralism means ‘anything goes’ and is thus unscientific. Pluralist responses to all three arguments are summarized. The third argument is identified to relate to a greater challenge for pluralism: an epistemological trade-off between diversity and consensus that suggests moving from a discussion about ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ towards a discussion about the adequate degree of plurality. We instantiate the trade-off by showing how it originates from two main challenges: the need to derive adequate quality criteria for a pluralist economics, and the necessity to propose strategies that ensure the communication across different research programs. The paper concludes with some strategies to meet these challenges.
