Antonio Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony is explained. Accordingly, people will identify with the goals of the ruling classes, even though it might not be in their material interest, because culture and discourse is used to vilify challenges to the capitalist system while capitalism itself is identified as promoting normatively good things such as freedom and the family.
